Can Canvas Tents Help With The Summer Heat?

At first glance, it may not seem like a canvas tent would be much help in the summer heat. If you’ve ever been inside one during hot weather, you’ll know that there’s a lot of insulation to them, so they can get stuffy with heat after an hour or two in direct sunlight. However, canvas tents can come in different designs and can be surprisingly effective at keeping cool in hot weather.

Canvas Tents Come in Different Designs

Canvas tents like ours are built to address all issues of comfortability in various seasons. There are a few key things to look for when choosing a canvas tent for summer use. First, choose a light-coloured tent if possible. Dark colours absorb more heat, so a lighter colour will reflect some of the sun’s rays rather than absorbing them.

Second, look for a tent with plenty of ventilation. Hot air rises, so having vents or windows near the top of the tent will help hot air escape and circulate fresh air through lower gaps. In fact, the most summer-friendly canvas tent we sell is the lean-to Whelen tent, which like other lean-tos, has only three walls.

Many tents, including the ones we sell, are designed for multiple seasons. But if heat is really a concern, you can buy several, with one designed for the least heat conservation.

Canvas tents are perfect for summer camping trips as long as they’re designed for it. When choosing a canvas tent for summer camping, be sure to select one that is specifically designed for hot weather. Many canvas tents have features like fold-back walls that allow you to customize the amount of ventilation and airflow. Choose a tent with mesh windows underneath canvas flaps and doors to optimize airflow, and look for a model with a waterproof coating that will help keep you cool and dry during rainstorms.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors in a canvas tent. While we recommend the heaviest tents with stove jacks for winter camping, it’s worth it to own a much lighter tent so you can leave it behind in the hottest weather.
